Cleaning your home with baking soda

Chances are if you open up your kitchen pantry you already have at least one box of baking soda in there, it might be a small box, but you have a box no less. Most people keep baking soda in their pantry because they use it for baking, but as we have already mentioned baking soda can do so much more.
If the cupboards underneath your kitchen and bathroom sinks are anything like mine they are probably filled to overflowing with a variety of household cleaners.
You have some for cleaning the bathrooms, others for counters, plus you have glass cleaner and degreasers and who knows what else. It seems like for every cleaning job in your house there is a separate cleaner made just for that. And, buy- ing all of those separate cleaners adds up over time.
But, what if I were to tell you that you could easily get rid of over half of the cleaners in your cupboards and replace them with cleaners made from ingredients that you already have on hand? The good news is this is more than true, by combining baking soda with a few other ingredients you probably already have on hand you can make a variety of cleaners that can be used all around the house.

Bathroom Cleaner

Ingredients

• 1 2/3 c. baking soda
• ½ c. liquid soap
• ½ c. water
• 2 tbsp. white vinegar

Let’s Clean:

1 .Mix the baking soda and liquid soap together in a medium-sized bowl.
2 .Dilute the mixture with water and then add vinegar.
3 .Mix together with a fork until all lumps have dissolved.
4 .Pour into a 16-ounce squirt bottle and shake well before each use.

Drain Cleaner

Ingredients

• ½ c. baking soda
• ½ c. vinegar
• Hot water

Let’s Clean:

1.If your drain is clogged pour ½ cup of vinegar down the drain followed by ½ cup of baking soda. Follow this with very hot water, either from the tap or boil some water in a tea kettle.

Oven Cleaner

Ingredients

• ½ c. baking soda
• 3 tbsp. water

Let’s Clean:

1.Mix together the baking soda and water until a thin paste forms. You can add more or less water as needed, but you want to create a paste that can be spread.
2.Spread the paste along the bottom and sides of your oven, making sure not to get any on the heating elements. Allow to sit for at least 12 hours.
3.Use a damp dish cloth to wipe off the baking soda paste as well as you can. You can use a plastic spatula to help scrape off the paste, if needed.

Extra Tip:

Sometimes the baking soda paste is not going to get everything off, no matter how hard you scrub and scrape. If your oven is really dirty or is being hard to clean spray the baking soda paste with a solution of one part vinegar to one part water.
After the baking soda stops foaming, wipe down with a clean, damp cloth.
