A shortage of hand sanitizer during the pandemic (and during the cold and flu season) is a potential nightmare for anyone wanting to keep their hands germ-free. The good news is that with just a few simple ingredients and a container to mix them in, you can make your own disinfectant from the comfort of your home! (No chemistry degree is required!)

What you need to make a hand sanitizer:
- Â Rubbing alcohol (99% alcohol)
- Â Aloe vera
- Â Liquid measuring cup
- Funnel (optional)
- Â Mixing bowl
- Â Essential oil (optional)
Steps to follow:
1. In the liquid measuring cup, pour ¾ cup of rubbing alcohol (which you then pour into the mixing bowl).
2. Add ¼ cup of aloe vera.
3. If you prefer a scented disinfectant, pour 5 to 7 drops of essential oil of your choice into the mixture (this step is optional).
4. Mix the three ingredients and let stand.
5. Using a funnel, pour the freshly prepared mixture into an empty soap dispenser or into a (recycled) bottle of hand sanitizer.
As long as the mixture contains at least 60% alcohol, it will act as an effective germ killer. Keep in mind that homemade hand sanitizer is only recommended in extreme situations – when you don’t have access to clean water to wash your hands – as it can eventually cause skin irritation or burns. Above all, it should never be used on children’s skin.
This remains a troubleshooting solution: the best way to kill germs and germs is to wash your hands with soap and water.
